Heart Transplant

Apollo Hospitals performed the first heart transplantation in 1995. This patient went on to survive for 14 years (the longest Indian transplant survivor) until 2009 when he succumbed to an unrelated cause.

In 2004, a multidisciplinary approach to End Stage Heart Failure was envisaged. With a team comprising of some of the best heart transplant Doctors and Surgeons, a formal Heart Transplant Programme was commenced in Apollo Hospitals. Apollo Hospitals, Chennai has successfully performed several Heart transplants, Lung transplants, Heart and Double Lung transplants and Heart Lung and Kidney transplantations and is regarded as the best heart transplant surgery hospital in India.

Kidney Transplant

It has the first organ transplant registry in India. The Centres also perform minimally invasive surgery for renal donors thereby minimising post-operative recovery time and hospitalisation.

The stringent infection control practices, immunosuppressive protocols and proactive vigil for complications and their prompt management make the service a huge success. The Transplant unit also integrates, analyzes and addresses the health needs of the transplant patient and his or her family. The Apollo Hospitals group has performed more than 10, 000 kidney transplants till date. We perform nearly 400 Kidney transplants each year.

Pancreas Transplant

A pancreas transplant is surgery to implant a healthy pancreas from a donor into a person whose pancreas no longer functions well.

Pancreatic transplantation is the only available cure for diabetes in appropriately selected patients. Pancreas transplantation adds a significant survival benefit to diabetic patients who otherwise face a life expectancy that is one-third of normal.

During pancreas transplant surgery, the donated pancreas is transplanted into the recipient, The pancreas must be transplanted into the patient receiving the organ within hours after removing it from the donor. The patient's own pancreas is not removed during a pancreas transplant. The donated pancreas is ‘added' to the recipient.

Lung Transplant

A lung transplant is a useful treatment for respiratory disease that has curtailed the lung function severely. In such patients, a lung transplant can increase longevity and also help improve quality of life. However, lung transplant surgery is a complex procedure needing cutting edge facility and care.

Once the donor organ becomes available it will be evaluated by our team. If it passes the criteria set by our team, the organ will be accepted for transplantation. Single lung, double lung or combined heart-lung transplant will be done depending on the disease of the patient. Usually patients with bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension will benefit from a double lung transplantation. The transplantation will be performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery usually takes anywhere between 6 to 10 hours depending on whether it is single or double lung and if complication occurs. Immediately after the surgery, the patient will be admitted in a dedicated heart and lung transplant unit for recovery.

The transplant team will continue to care for you indefinitely. The purpose of the follow up care includes monitoring of the recovery process and early identification of infection, rejection and intolerance to medications. It includes scheduled visits of once a month in the first year along with blood tests, x-ray and lung function studies. The infectious disease and endocrinology consultants, physical therapist and dietician will continue caring for you during this phase to achieve a safe recovery.
